Techniques
Bending a note - Play a note with either your ring or middle finger. Now push it up toward the ceiling and notice it change pitch. Bends are almost always used to change a note up to the next fret note or to the note 2 frets up. It depends on the note.
Picking off - Put your index finger on a note and hold it there. Now put your ring finger on the same string on another fret. Pick the string and pull your ring finger off the string hard, toward the ground (not straight up) so that it actually picks the string just like your pick did. When you do this, you will hear the note that’s being held by your index finger. This is called a ‘pickoff’.
Hammering- Put your index finger on a note and hold it there. Now pick the string, and right after you pick it, slam your ring finger down hard on another fret and you will hear the sound of that second note much the same as if you had picked it. This is called a ‘hammer’. When you hammer, do it hard, quick and with the least fatty part of your fingertip.
You can alternately and quickly hammer and pick off for a very quick effect between a couple notes. (actually, you don’t have to use your pick at all - your hammers and pickoffs will do all the picking you need)
Many rock players have techniques that involve very fancy hammers and pickoffs which sound extremely fast and cool.
