Fancy Chords

Here are a few ‘fancier’ chords, and you should learn to barre them also.

The minor 7th chord can substitute for a normal minor chord. The major 7th chords and 6th chords can substitute for a normal major chord.

The dominant 7th chord (labeled as just ‘7’) isn’t really a substitute chord. It’s kind of different in nature, so it’s kind of its own chord. The augmented (aug) and diminished (dim) chords are REALLY different in nature and aren’t really like any other chords. You may have to let your ear teach you where to use them.

Finally, I also showed you that chord that is the VII chord of a key. Remember I called it a weak, unstable-sounding chord? You can see if you like it and if you do, you can figure out how to play it in other keys. I have shown it to you here as Fm7b5, so that would make it a fancy version of the VII chord in the key of F# major.
